My Personal Advocacy Journey

"An aware parent loves all children he or she interacts with - for you are a caretaker for those moments in time." Doc Childre

  • What inspires and excites you most about your advocacy plan and being an advocate?

  • What inspires me the most about my advocacy plans is the impact that I will make helping the families with children with special needs. I am excited to see how my action plan will unfold into a usable resources for families with special needs children. I am excited as well to share this information with my colleagues so our agency can impact all the families that need advocacy support.

  • What challenges and/or anxieties do you feel related to engaging in the advocacy efforts you have targeted?

  • The challenges I have came across thus far is finding usable information and resources that would fit the needs of the families in which I work with. I want to make sure all the information that I place in the resource guide is useful and not overwhelming like most IDEA and IEP information is already.
Anxieties that I have is that my advocacy action plan will not work or that my focus group will not like it. I am nervous about what they will say about it, I am a people pleaser in some respects so I don't like to hear negative comments. I know that the feed back that I will get will only help in the end it just makes me nervous.

  • What do you believe will be most effective in helping you overcome any challenging emotions you may be feeling with regard to presenting and implementing your Advocacy Action Plan?

  • I believe that I can overcome the challenging emotions in regards to presenting and implementing my action plan is by creating a tool that I know well, practice what I plan on saying and make sure all my information is available and ready for the day I'm presenting it.

  • How can you encourage others in their advocacy efforts, and how can others encourage you?

  • I can encourage others in their advocacy efforts by being positive with my comments and offering help or suggestions with their efforts. I also can help them by sharing what I have learned thus far in this class in regards to creating an action plan.
I think others can encourage my advocacy efforts by giving me constructive criticism when it is needed, offer help in the efforts or suggestions to help me make my advocacy plan better.

    1. Kristina-
When I become a teacher I want to focus on special needs children they are truly my passion. I am very interested to see how your action plan turns out. I have found that an IEP meeting can be very overwhelming for parents and staff members. However, I think for your action plan if you present your information in a clear and understandable matter you will be okay and everyone will like it. I also have the same anxiety issues as you that my audience won't like my plan. I feel that parents get lost when it comes to IEP’s because they don’t understand the language being used. I think you will do great, stay positive and I am sure your plan will be great. – Natalie Furzland

      1. Natalie, Thanks for the input I think that I might create a index or a list of the terms frequently used and what they mean in my resources for my action plan. I was toying with the thoughts of using the list but you mentioning that parents have trouble understanding the language as well I think that adding them will help the parents too.

    2. I think this is a great topic to focus an action plan on. Many people need to be educated on the importance of finding resources for at risk children. I think that as long as you stay positive in your efforts to make others aware of the passionn you have for the cause, then you will be able to get feedback that will be helpful in your efforts.

    3. Kristina,

I would hope that you would take into consideration that most people comment with more positive and you cansee better ideas when their comment begins with a positive and some comments even end on a positive note too. also count the positive attitude as message being recieved to others. And if someone ends up commenting and not even being positive enough to commend any effort made, than you can count that one out. That is most likely someone who is never positive.

    4. Hello Kristine

This is a wonderful topic to advocate. Every family want their child to grow and reach their full potential in school but some families of children with disabilities or delay in development face unique challenges and need extra help. Early intervention is an important resource for all families and it helps builds a platform for children and has a positive impacts on their development such as their physical, cognitive, social/emotional, language. As educators it is up to us to make sure that families who do have to face the challenges do get the extra help not only from us through support by also through the great resources that are being provided now a days for children and their families.

    5. Hi Kristine,

The topic you have chosen is fantastic. I love your topic, due to the fact that your topic is an everyday problem with parents and families in our community. Kristine I really believe when advocating for families who have children with special needs we are making a change. I think it's sad that parents do lack in resources for children with special needs. I think what your doing is great and I can see your advocate action plan moving forward in your community.
